Microsoft offers a variety of free tools for all of its operating systems - known as Microsoft PowerToys. These utilities appeal to a variety of users, from graphic artists to computer nerds. They can help you manage images, manage your desktop, synchronize files, tweak system settings, and much more.
Perhaps the most useful new tool is SyncToy - a deceptive name for such a potentially useful utility. SyncToy allows you to synchronize files between two locations, for example between your PC and a backup location, or across a network. Each SyncToy job can be scheduled to run automatically using the Windows Task Scheduler in the Control Panel, or can run manually upon request. A variety of actions are available for synchronization, from achieving a "mirroring" effect (remembering renames and deletes), to simply having one folder duplicate the contents of another, to two-way synchronization.
Computers are supposed to help simplify our lives, and these utilities were developed to help you reach that goal. The current set of Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP is available here.
