A key decision to make at the beginning of any web development project is to decide what technology to use. Beyond the fundamental "Windows versus Linux" platform decision, there are several other technology decisions that should be considered.
If your website consists of static HTML pages, this may not be an issue. However, the issue of "portability" should be addressed if your website incorporates dynamic database driven content, the use of a content management system (CMS), or back-office integration.
Portability is defined by the degree to which your website is dependent on a specific technology (server setup, specific software application, or proprietary applications). A website using commonly available technology is more portable than one that requires integration of specific software or relies on a specific vendor. The greater the portability, the quicker your site will be able to recover should it need to be moved to a new server in the future.
Some questions to consider are:
Is the database being used one that is common and supported?
Does the programming/scripting language used enjoy broad industry support?
Will the choice of operating system affect my ability to integrate online content with back-office systems?
Will my application rely on any proprietary software or technology?
In some cases, you may have to accept a less portable solution based on a cost-benefit analysis, or on current technology employed by your organization. Prior to making this decision, it is important to consider and understand the pros and cons of the solution.
Where possible, Wild-Webs builds applications that are flexible and portable - even to the point of making sure that many of our applications are capable of running in either a Windows or Linux environment.
